Prepping for an "Official" Year of Homeschooling

My son is turning four soon.  So in one sense, he will not be "officially" homeschooling since he is not required to go to school yet.  But while we have been teaching and unofficially homeschooling him since birth, I will be using an actual curriculum and scheduling our days around lessons which makes it more of an "official" year to me as the planner/teacher.

The plan is to use Sonlight as my core go-to curriculum.  I bought one used, from a friend, that I have looked through and recently plotted out specific days to cover the material.  It already has an awesome weekly planner, but I am going to schedule school around life which is one major benefit I see in homeschooling.  When I worked at a job, I worked year round and took vacation days when I needed/wanted to take off.  For my kids, I want them to be off when their Dad is off work and be able to travel when we want to travel.  So for example, my calendar has a few weeks with no school in the fall.  This will give us time to travel to our destination to then keep to the Feast of Tabernacles and then adjust to getting home after the trip.

I also decided - though subject to change - to use Abeka for the science portion for this first "test" year.  The Abeka book, I also bought used from another friend, seems like a great basic starting point to build from.  Looking at some of the early lessons it covers all the 5 senses and how God designed us so that those senses work and how to use those senses to discover the world around us that He created.

As for language/writing, I am still debating what to use and whether to even go there yet.  I keep thinking that focusing on reading and oral story telling will be best since he is still so young.  I know we will continue using Reading Eggs to help him learn how to read since it has been working great so far.

Considering this is my first planned out "school year", I am nervous and excited.  The resources I have gathered give me so much confidence and it is truly a blessing to have so many available options.  Here's to a year of leaps and bounds in learning, of skipping and fun times!

What kind of year are you going into with your kid(s)?  Not yet starting school, homeschool, or public school?
