Not Deterred

My Dad has had a house project to work on for awhile and for various reasons had not gotten started on it.  The project: to put wood flooring into a guest bedroom, replacing carpet.

We came up with a game plan so my husband could help him complete the project while we are visiting.  On Saturday night we started moving out everything we could from the room (bookshelf, dresser, etc).  My husband took down the last remnants of items on the wall that were mine (old plaques and sports pictures and such) since it was my room growing up.  On Sunday the bed was moved out of the room, my Dad bought paint, the guys removed the carpet and tack strips, they painted and had the room fully prepped by the end of the day.

In the midst of all of this was my two year old son watching and wanting to "help".  He "helped" sweep and really enjoyed watching the process.  My main concern was keeping the kids away from the paint fumes as much as possible.  The kids took their naps on the other side of the house and went outside a lot.

On Monday, began the placing of the underlayment and the wood floor.  For most of the day I was out with my Mom and the kids.  We enjoyed time at a park, walking around a lake and spending time at my Grandma's house.  The guys worked hard and we saw them mid day to each lunch together.  It was neat to see the progress as at least half of the wood flooring was down at that point.  My son loved going in and picking up small loose wood pieces (ones he was allowed to hold).

We could have very easily not offered to help.  We could have easily said, we have kids and it would be too hectic and dangerous and hard.  We were not deterred by any of these "reasons."  This has been a great learning experience for my son, a chance for him to see his Grandpa working on a home project, his Daddy helping and to see what all goes into such a project.  And by the end of it the room will be transformed with a much needed update.

Today we get to help move the furniture back into the room.  It's great to live life, be with family, complete projects and teach children.
