A Special Thanksgiving Craft

I like the idea of crafts, but I am not always craft minded.  If we're at the library and there is a craft after reading time, great.  If there is a craft inspired by LaLaLogic (check out my post: https://springingforwardtogether.blogspot.com/2017/11/lalalogic.html) that's helpful.  I just do not usually come up with original ideas on my own.  I probably need to refer to my Pinterest pins and look for new ones for ideas.

But on Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, I was actually inspired with my own idea for a craft!  I did the writing and cutting, but my son did the coloring and stringing of letters to make up a sign we hung that said, "Happy Thanksgiving".

I was happily surprised at how willing and focused he was to do his part.  There were a LOT of letters and he even said when he started coloring, "This is hard."  I talked with him about how a lot of good things and worthwhile things are hard.  It was a great teaching moment.

Additionally I got to see him excited and inventive about something unexpected.  He was using colored pencils for the coloring and the pencils needed sharpening.  He saw the pencil sharpener for the first time and asked to sharpen the pencils himself.  Then he proceeded to fill each pencil hole (there were three sharpener holes, each a different size) with pencils and use it as a boat.  I love his imagination.

The stringing was also a long process and when he did it incorrectly (a letter would have been backwards or only one hole was strung and each letter had two holes), I explained it needed to be undone and then strung correctly.  I showed him how and he was very cooperative and focused on getting it done and following instructions.

We were excited to show his Daddy and have it hung.  It made me happy to have a craft with a purpose that we could use and appreciate, not just a craft to do and throw away.  I love these moments of spending time with him and seeing how his skills are growing, such as his attention to detail and his art skills.
